Historical insight into Victorian era Lingerie

The peculiarity of the Victorian style was that before putting on a dress, a girl or woman of Victorian times had to put on the proper underwear. But it was not a two-piece set, as it is nowadays. Women have worn many underwear in several layers, and the total weight could easily exceed two kilograms.

Almost the entire nineteenth century was a period of corsets. The waist was supposed to be tightened and reduced, posture strengthened, and this “corset tyranny” continued until the beginning of the First World War.

Ladies did not wear corsets on a naked body. It could not be washed often, and it was uncomfortable to wear these lacing plates directly on the skin. First, a shirt was put on. It was made of  linen or cotton, long enough, sleeveless or with short sleeves.

The “bottoms” consisted of stockings and pantaloons, not very similar to the current linen: knee-length long, decorated with lace and frills at the bottom, they were secured at the waist with ties.

A corset was put on top of the shirt, pressing the top of the pantaloons. It was usually fastened at the back with hooks or lacing. The shape of corsets could vary depending on the period – once they were worn short, and some reached almost to the knees when S-shaped silhouettes came into fashion. An underskirt, or even several, was worn over the corset, as in the early Victorian period, until the mid-50s, when the shape of the dress required it.

As you can imagine, ladies could not dress themselves and needed help.
