The Best Eyeshadow Palette for Dark Skin Tones

You have heard it all before. Another “inclusive” beauty brand is advertising its newest line of eye makeup. They have “nude” colors to build some texture over the eyelid. On you, however, those nudes look stark white.

Many women of color hear the same story time and time again. They have faith in a brand’s all-inclusive promise, and the brand fails to deliver. It is a tale as old as time.

The beauty industry often excludes black women, especially darker-skinned women. On top of minimally inclusive shades, many makeup brands have toxic additives. So when you finally find the perfect shade, it ends up being harmful to your health.

Is There a Solution for Darker Skinned Women?

Fortunately, there are a few places that help women with darker skin. Real inclusive makeup does exist. You do not have to pay an arm and a leg to get it, either. Plenty of brands are bossing up and changing the standard of beauty.

As people of color, we have to create our own standard of beauty. The fair-skinned, porcelain trope does not benefit us. Instead, we have to make our own rules and address our own needs. Growing awareness is a great start, but we have a lot of hurdles to overcome.

As a brand, we are taking this commitment seriously. We are a proud Jamaica makeup brand, bringing our cultural flair along for the ride. We offer a refined line of makeup without the wallet-killing prices. We never test on animals, and we put your health and self-confidence first.

We are meeting our end of the bargain. At this point, it is up to you, the consumer, to support our brand and similar brands. As the cosmetics industry hears our voices, the change will come. It is up to us to challenge those basic beauty standards!

Eyeshadow Tips for Women of Color

Let’s start with something simple.

  1. Find your undertone.

Think of everything in terms of warm, cool, or neutral. To find your undertones, take a look at your wrist. Blue veins mean that your skin has cooler tones. Green veins indicate warmer tones. If you see blue and green, you may have a neutral undertone.

2. Choose a palette of vibrant colors.

Bold colors look amazing on brown skin. Despite being overpowering on white skin, powerful colors shine bright on dark-skinned women. Do not be afraid to try on bright gold, silver, purple, and blue.

If you are going for a more casual look, soft pinks and violets work too!

3.  Find an eyeshadow primer; try not to use a concealer!

Concealer tends to crease after a while. Our eyelids are oily, and concealers add moisture. Eyeshadow folds if it gets too much oil on top.

Instead, find a nice eyeshadow primer. Oil can’t reach your eyeshadow, so it won’t break down. If you have to use a concealer, be very minimal with it.

4.  Use your shadow to compliment your eye shape.

Are your eyes wide and shapely? Do the corners turn up or down? Are they hooded, wide-set, almond, etc.?

Knowing your eye shape lets you apply your eyeshadow correctly. There are ways to do it that compliment your natural shape. Luckily, there are plenty of quizzes and pictures to use as a reference!
