Because I have acne-prone skin, I am also prone to dark spots. Actually, I used to think dark spots are harder to vanish than acne until I learned about vitamin c serums. They work really fast, some just less than a month. Unfortunately, most of them especially those that work faster, have a short shelf life. They oxidize fast! And once it fully turned brown, you have no choice but to toss it to the bin. So when Soko Glam reached out to me two months ago about the latest powder Vitamin C they created in collaboration with Neogen, I immediately jump into their offer. But can it really replace your regular vitamin C serums? Read my Neogen Real Vita C Powder Lemon review below to learn more.
WHAT IS IT?
Neogen Real Vita C Lemon Powder is an innovative DIY powder claims to be gentle yet offers all the brightening benefits of a powerful vitamin C serum but without the chance of oxidation. It is a travel-friendly powder that can be used on all skin types, even those with sensitive or oily skin.
NOTABLE INGREDIENTS
It contains 17% ascorbic acid (pure vitamin C) just like with the CosRx Triple C Lightning Liquid which is one of the best vitamin c serums I tried (Ed Note: I will post its review next week). Besides that, it also has allantoin, hydrolyzed collagen, trehalose, and lemon extract to hydrate and revitalizes dull, tired skin for a more even, radiant and glowing complexion.
Lastly, the formula is free of alcohol, silicone, paraben, artificial fragrance, surfactants, and mineral oil. You can see its full ingredient list in Skin Carisma.
PERFORMANCE
APPLICATION
After cleansing, pour a generous amount of your favorite essence, toner, or serum (I highly recommend using a watery formula and avoid any products that contain AHAs, BHAs, or retinol to avoid irritation) into the palm of your hand as your base. Mix one scoop of the Real Vita C Powder with the base product allowing 5-10 seconds for the powder to dissolve. If you notice a grainy texture after mixing, we recommend adding more base product.
And then apply the mixture to your entire face and continue your skincare routine. Personally, I only use this at night. But if you’re also going to use this in the morning, be sure to apply SPF as the last step of your skincare routine since vitamin C can cause sun sensitivity.
PACKAGING
It is packaged in a jar and comes with a very tiny scoop. And looking at the scoop, you can tell this 20g of Neogen Real Vita C Lemon Powder will really last a long time.
SCENT
It has the same scent of those chewable vitamin C tablets, which is not surprising because they are made with ascorbic acid too. But it’s not too overpowering, I actually barely smelled it when I mixed it with the Klairs Supple Preparation Unscented Toner.
TEXTURE & FORMULA
Despite being a Vitamin C, it does not really sting your skin. Actually, I didn’t even feel any heat. Though take note, it is subjective because some serums do not feel anything on me but can be a bit painful for others.
While its texture on your skin actually depends on the product you mix it with. If you use a thick and dewy serum, then that’s what you will feel. But if it feels grainy, then it means you need to add more of whatever you used, either toner, essence, or serum.
RESULT
I’ve used this product for half a month mixing it only with my Klairs Supple Preparation Unscented Toner, and honestly, I’m not quite sure how I feel about this product. Admittedly, it has some qualities of everything I want with Vitamin C serums: 1) does not sting or warm; 2) has a long shelf life; and 3) affordable. But if you ask me if it works fast, I’m not so sure how I’m going to answer you.
It is because before using this product, my skin is already in good condition –no acne, no dark spots– as I have told in my previous post about Marie Kondo-ing my skincare routine. But I can tell you straight that while using this product, my skin stayed as it is in good condition. The only thing I don’t like is the mixing part. I always end up using too little or too much of the toner. It kinda annoys me.
VERDICT
PROS: Has a longer shelf life and more affordable considering the amount it contains compared to vitamin C serums. Does not sting, and doesn’t uncomfortably warm your skin. Lastly, it kept my skin spotless.
CONS: Mixing it with your fave product can be tricky.
Can it replace your Vitamin C Serums? Not really. Because some people, like me, still prefer serums that are ready to use. But if you favor longer shelf life, you can switch to this.
