How Do You Plan a Successful Bar Crawl?

The Sukhumvit Bangkok nightlife is unlike any other, and many praise it for the unique experiences on offer. But whether or not your night closes to a successful end depends on several factors. So, if you want you and your crew to experience the same thing all over again, planning the first one should be done right.

Set the Goal

It’s a bar crawl, what else could be the purpose? Contrary to what you might think, there are different reasons to go club hopping.

  • Are you doing it for a simple gathering with friends, or do you want to experience it for the first time?
  • Do you want to connect with the local community and highlight some of the best pubs, clubs, and bars within your neighbourhood?
  • What kind of experiences do you want to have? Remember that clubs aren’t created equal, and some might offer something unique than others.

Once you define the purpose, planning the rest will be easier.

Date and Time

  • With most people not working the next day, weekends are often the best time to go on a bar crawl. Just make sure the bars you want to visit are open.
  • Consider everyone’s schedule when going with a group. Some might already have prior appointments.
  • Check the schedule for any local festivals or events scheduled, so you won’t end up smacked in the middle of a packed crowd, unless this is something everyone wants to experience.
  • You’re likely to be elbowing through a packed crowd during these times.
  • Don’t overlook the impact of the weather and season. Plan your outing properly if the weather is cold, rainy, and the like.

Club Selection

Sukhumvit alone is already teeming with bars and clubs that you may not be able to visit all in one night.

  • Decide on the number of bars to visit. Make sure the group gets a chance to savour every establishment rather than a case of just in and out. Avoid cramming in too many bars to visit and be flexible in case there are issues encountered.
  • Map out every bar’s location and carefully consider transportation needs. Do you need to take a cab to move from one club to another, or are those bars within walking distance? If you want to visit several bars in one outing, consider those that are close to each other.
  • Think of a specific theme to help guide in your selection process. Clubs and bars can range from sports bars to cocktail bars, and everything else in between. Going with one theme makes for a cohesive experience.
  • Consider whether your group prefers a laid-back or lively vibe. Some of your crew might prefer to hear themselves talk rather than scream over loud music.
  • Make sure to research the prices of drinks and food and compare against your budget. Considering that you’ll be visiting several clubs, you should consider everyone’s financial situation.

Set Ground Rules

Before hitting the road, make sure everyone is well-aware of the dos and don’ts.

  • No one should be driving during a bar crawl. You either walk or take a cab.
  • Limit alcohol intake in each club so the activity won’t be cut short because someone’s too drunk to continue. The goal is to better navigate after-hours entertainment sober until the last club.
  • Decide at which point the group can stop the crawl. If a bar meets all your agreed requirements, for example, you can spend the rest of the time there.
  • Agree on a leader who will be responsible for ensuring everyone’s safety and enjoyment.
