Question: Tell us about yourself!
Answer: Hi I’m Samantha Mitling and I’m from Lino Lakes, MN. I specialize in martial arts.

Question – Tell us an inspirational moment from your childhood?
Answer – When I was younger, I always enjoyed watching the Diamond National Karate Championships in Minneapolis, MN. Some of the best sport karate athletes in the world would compete there and it was super inspiring and motivating to me. I wanted to be like them someday.

Question – What made you choose this career path?
Answer – I always loved performing. Whether it was for dance recitals, karate tournaments, or even musicals, I loved being able to perform for others. When I fell in love with martial arts at the age of 5, I knew it was something that I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I’m thankful that I get to use both my passions for martial arts and performing in my career.

Question – What are some challenges you had to face?
Answer – Trying to balance everything in my life has been a big challenge. I’m a full-time college student, I train 6 days a week, I travel to compete 1-2 times a month, and teach martial arts, along with managing my social media. I’ve also battled with shoulder and rib injuries off and on the past few years because of my training. It has definitely been a challenge, but I’m back on track again with my recovery.

Question – Who and what are your biggest influences/inspiration?
Answer – I’ve always looked up to my dad. He was a D1 athlete, and I admired his work ethic and drive. Another person who inspires me is my coach, Derek Meegan. I would always watch him compete when I was younger, and I was amazed by his skills. I look up to him as both a competitor and coach. One of my first martial arts instructors, Grand Master Miller, really influenced my martial arts training as well. He always taught us to be humble, disciplined, and have a good attitude.

Question – What do you consider to be your biggest accomplishment?
Answer – I won my first world title back in 2019. It was my biggest goal at the time, and I worked very hard to accomplish it.

Question – What are some of your other passions?
Answer – I enjoy spending time outside, creating art, and baking muffins

Question – What do you plan to achieve in the next few years?
Answer – I’m working towards doing more in the film and entertainment industry. I want to do more with my performances and stunts.

Question – What is your purpose and/or mission?
Answer – Martial arts is my biggest passion, and I love being able to express myself through it. I strive to be the best I can be. I also want to be able to inspire others, especially young girls – I want to remind them that they can do and accomplish whatever they set their mind to.

Question – Tell us about your early life and how it shaped you into who you are today.
Answer – When I was in pre-school, I had a friend who had just started martial arts and absolutely loved it. Of course, I wanted to try it out for myself. After 6 months of begging, my parents let me join. I immediately fell in love with the sport. I did a lot of sports growing up: Swimming, tennis, gymnastics, dance, ice-skating, etc. I loved sports, but I had to pick one and focus on that. I chose to stick with karate and got my blackbelt at the age of 9.
