Process of Manchester First aid courses
The course is run by the NHS (NHS Merseyside) and is recognized nationally. You need 2 years of experience in an emergency service before becoming a paramedic. To do this course you need to pass the Paramedics National Council Licensing Examination (PNCLE). The PNCLE examination consists of 4 parts – Written Test (60%), Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE) Oral Assessment (20%), and Skill assessment (10%). There are 8 different OSCE stations based on clinical conditions e.g. Head Injury, Cardiac Arrest, etc. Each station lasts about 5 minutes and they are timed. The OSCE assesses your knowledge of how to deal with a variety of emergencies and situations. Each station is graded out of 10 with 0 being the worst score and 10 the best. Your final grade is then determined by adding together the scores of the 6 OSCEs.
You can take the test at any time throughout the year. As soon as you pass the written exam you will get a letter confirming when your results and certificate will be sent. Once you receive your result and you have passed the 1st stage of the examination you will be invited to attend a face-to-face interview. At this point, we will ask you if you wish to continue to the 2nd stage of the examination i.e. the oral assessment. If you decide not to proceed to the oral assessment you will still be able to apply to retake the written exam after 12 months.
