Requirements for a Maltese Wedding

  • First of all, there is no minimum residency needed to get married in Malta. Most of the couples who tie the knot here, stay for a maximum of 1-2 days.
  • Now, when you visit the country, it’s better to directly visit the marriage registrar to finalize things, so that the next steps are smoother.
  • For a civil or a church wedding, there is a minimum requirement of paperwork, although it looks quite haunting initially, but believe us it is not so.
  • Finally, when you have married a Maltese National, it’s better to apply for citizenship immediately, but in case you are a foreign citizen, you can’t apply for citizenship for at least 5 years. So do keep a check on that.

  • There are certain other caveats here – like if the foreign national marries a Malta national and the person dies before the 5th year, the foreign citizen is still applicable for the Maltese citizenship
  • Also in case of divorce or separation, the foreign national can apply for citizenship as long as they were married to the Maltese citizen for more than five years.

When to submit documents?

Your application should be sent to the registrar at least 6 weeks before the wedding. So, you do have a lot of time to get the documents verified and signed beforehand.
