Why Electric Heating Might Work For Your Home

Did you grow up in the kind of home where there was no problem having the heating on all day? Or was a grown-up known to place a strip of Sellotape over the thermostat, as if it would magically stop anyone from peeling it back and turning the dial up a few degrees?

At this time of year, the mornings, afternoons, evenings…pretty much all of the day can feel cold and make it hard to take that chill out of your bones. You might be tempted to look at the gloominess outside and want to crank that thermostat up to let your home heating do its thing, especially with so many of us working from home.

While it will feel great, it does have the downside of wasting fuel and money, especially when there’s an alternative out there for everyone who now has a home office; the wonderful world of electric heating.

Now, when I say electric heating, I am not referring to those little blow heaters that barely get a room warm while whirring away all day and running the risk of blowing a fuse. I am talking about electric radiators you can install on the wall in any room. Wondering if you should get one? Here’s what to consider.

Whether your room is always cold
I reckon everyone has that one room at home which never gets warm, even when the heating is up to full. When you have a problem space like this, it is usually that your radiator can’t match the heat requirements for the room. Instead of asking someone to come along to pull up floorboards for new pipes, it is much easier to have an electric radiator installed by a plug socket instead.

Whether you are spending most of the day in one place
Has working from home turned your kitchen table into your little office space? And after the day is done, you do some yoga/a workout in the same space, before cooking dinner there too? If you are spending most of your day in the one space, you will benefit from an electric heater running throughout the day, rather than multiple radiators all on at the same time (it is such a nuisance having to go around and readjust radiators every other day)

It also works on the flip side too. I need to switch my brain off after the workday is done and spend time in the living room to wind down. Setting up a small electric radiator to turn on in the evening gives me a warm welcome, rather than having to wait for the heating to do its job.

Whether your energy bills are too high
It takes a lot to heat a room, but double-check your home heating rate isn’t extortionate. If you are lucky to live somewhere with low electric tariffs, especially when compared to gas and oil, it’s in your interests to go electric as much as possible.

Whether you want to “hide” your radiators
Radiators do take up a lot of space. If only there were some way to get rid of them and keep a room warm? Step in infrared radiators. Honestly, go and look at one right now. They are incredible. Instead of having a normal radiator on your wall, you can get a fancy flat screen radiator which looks more like art than a home heating accessory. Now they are expensive, but if you want to free up wall space, and are already planning on ditching old radiators that have seen better days, they are definitely worth a look.
