Anxious, tired or just struggling to get that Friday feeling? With such an array of essential oils out there and barely a one-trick pony in sight, there’s an oil to boost any mood. One for every day of the week, in fact.
Monday: Peppermint Oil
Peppermint is a hybrid species of spearmint and water mint with menthol as the most active ingredient (35-45%). It is one of the oldest European herbs used for medicinal purposes and has proven to boost energy and mental focus, perfect for that Monday morning brainstorm you’d rather snooze through. Plus, with its anti-microbial benefits helping to cure acne naturally, you’ll be looking as good on the outside as you feel on the inside.
How to use: Take a few whiffs from the bottle to perk you up and apply in small amounts to spots for blemish-free skin. *
Tuesday: Chamomile Oil
Lying awake wondering how you’ll ever get through this week’s to-do list? Turn to the soothing effects of chamomile. One of the oldest essential oils, it has proven to fight anxiety and depression as well as reducing symptoms of insomnia, you’ll be able to get that much-needed rest. Did you know chamomile essential oil is even more effective than chamomile tea and just as easy to use?
How to use: Diffuse next to the bed, rub 1-2 drops into the temples, or inhale directly from the bottle. *
Wednesday: Orange Oil
This essential oil’s antidepressant and anxiolytic properties act as a perfect hump day pick-me-up! Citrus oils are not generally recommended for topical use for the danger of photo-toxicity on exposure to sunlight. However, sweet orange oil is relatively milder. Stay safe by using in small amounts and preferably in the evening.
How to use: Add several drops to a relaxing bath and feel your worries slowly melt away. Or, for faster results, apply 1-2 drops of oil to your wrists and rub them together. *
Thursday: Bergamot Oil
Bergamot is defined as a hybrid between a sour orange and a lemon. Among its many benefits, this oil helps maintain proper metabolic rates by stimulating hormonal secretions. These, in turn, aid the breakdown of sugar and can lower blood pressure. So whether it’s a stressful Thursday or you’ve just lost the will to resist those office treats, choose bergamot.
How to use: Add 2-3 drops of oil to your temples or abdomen. *
Friday: Ylang Ylang Oil
With a naturally rich, floral scent, ylang ylang has been long sought after for its romantic and uplifting properties. In fact, it is one of the key ingredients used in Chanel no. 5! Other than smelling like a goddess, this essential oil has shown to release negative emotions including anger, low self-esteem, and even jealousy. So what if this week hasn’t gone as planned? Radiate those positive vibes, Monday will be a brand new week!
How to use: Diffuse throughout your home or inhale straight from the bottle. Ylang ylang should be diluted with a carrier oil such as coconut oil at a 1:1 ratio before applying to the skin. *
* Always perform a patch test for sensitivity before applying essential oils to large or sensitive areas.
