I recently moved from Victoria to Queensland and I have to say, the whole experience was vastly pain-free – owing largely to the fact that I had previously moved interstate and learned a lot in the process. The first time around, things were not quite as smooth, so I made sure that this time I didn’t repeat any mistakes, and that I worked to make sure things were as easy as possible. One of the first things I made sure I did was get a great service done on my car as soon as I arrived in Queensland, and I was able to find a great mobile mechanic on the Gold Coast who helped me out with that. The reason being is because when I moved down last time, my car wasn’t in the best shape after making the drive and actually broke down, so I made sure I took care of that straight away. Other than my car, I want to outline some of the top tips I have for making your relocation an absolute breeze!

Tip One – Get organised early

A big problem I had last time I moved is that I underestimated the amount of time it would take to pack everything up. As such, I was scrambling to get things done when I needed to do them. If I had simply gotten started earlier, it would have been a lot smoother.

Tip Two – Redirect your mail

You can get in touch with Australia Post to get your mail redirected for a period of time when you move and this makes life a lot easier. Simply fill out a form, pay a small amount and hey-presto, the mail arrives at your new address. Simple.

Tip Three – Engage your mates

You know all those times you helped your friends move? Well, now it’s their turn to step up to the plate. Sweeten the deal for your friends with a thank you BBQ or meal at a pub and they’ll be all too happy to assist you pack.

Tip Four – Make lists

If you don’t have a list of what to pack, you’ll find that you might miss things. Not a good thing to do when you have a lot to deal with! Make lists and check them. Twice.

Tip Five – Throw things away

Now is a great time to declutter your home. Go through and bag stuff up that can go to charity, and then make a collection of things that just need to be binned. Be ruthless!

Tip Six – Get professional movers

If your moving budget stretches to professional help, you should get it. It makes life a whole lot easier.

Tip Seven – Sort out the registration of your car

When moving interstate, you need to swap the plates of your car over. Sort this out as early as possible so it’s one less thing to worry about.

Tip Eight – Plan ahead with clubs/libraries etc

If you’re in a bridge club, a library, a sports team – you should work out what you have in your local area and get in touch prior to the move. That way, you’ll be able to hit the ground running.

Tip Nine – Map out your move

When it’s time to do the big move, you should have a plan for how things are going to go down. That way there will be fewer surprises.

Tip Ten – Stay hydrated

When you’re moving all day in the sun, you need to drink plenty of water. It’s kinda obvious, but you’d be surprised how many people don’t stay hydrated and get a headache!

Tip Eleven – Get in touch with a new doctor

When you move interstate, you lose all of your old service-people, so it’s a good idea to get a new doctor sorted out prior if possible. They can get in touch with your old doctor and get your records in their clinic, too.

Tip Twelve – Stay calm

When you’re moving interstate, it can be a bit daunting. Don’t freak out – you’ll be fine. And if you hate it, you can always move back.

Good luck!
