Wayyyy before Hedi Slimane was named as the new Creative Director of
Yves Saint Laurent Paris and introduced “Bohemian Grunge” to the world I always described my style as a mix of bohemian and rock n roll or grunge. Like him, I love music especially indie and rock bands. If you are following me in Instagram you probably know it already because of my series of shots and videos from The Killers Battle Born Tour in Manila a few days ago.
I’m not that really into girly-girl stuff, except fashion and make-ups of course. I like watching sports and hates Nicholas Sparks novels and movies -no offense to his fans- but I was never really considered a tomboy. A friend of mine once told me when we were college freshmen, “ikaw ang pinaka kikay na rakista”. In English “you are the most girly-girl rocker””. Kikay is a Tagalog slang word which is use to describe girls who are very into fashion and make-up.
Black is the color I commonly wear and mostly paired with boots. Adding colors was always my weakness. Very recently I tried adding colors but I guess it’s a bit of a failure because I heard some negative feedback especially in school but I don’t mind, I have moments I do it right too and I’m freaking 20 years old. I’m still young to try something new, experiment and get away with it. But I’m proud to say I no longer stick to black on my everyday outfits… except on this one.
When I saw this dress from Traffic People it was eggshell white and sort of reminded me of Liv Tyler’s movie Stealing Beauty. I immediately wanted it but I opted for black, of course. But when I finally received it I don’t know where else I am going to use it except on the beach or in some holiday vacation but summer is already over and also I want it SO BAD to pair it with boots too. So I turned my boho grunge and rock this look instead in an invite-only cocktail party that I attended.
I first thought of pairing this with combat boots but I thought people are already expecting it from me so I tried a different kind of boots, my one-of-a-kind ankle boots from Risque Designs. This is my favorite shoes at the moment, because it is so unique! If you look clearly the shoe laces are in the sides instead in the common middle and it is made of exclusive handwoven fabric for Risque Design from Paete, Laguna a province in the Philippines.
Back to Hedi Slimane, when he showed his debut collection for Saint Laurent in Paris Fashion Week a couple of years ago, a lot of critics gave him bad reviews but despite that, the collection gained so much success when it comes to buyers. I guess until now, just like when grunge was introduced by Kurt Cobain, Bohemian Grunge is still a debate in the fashion industry whether is it chic or not. For me, just keep in mind what Gore Vidal said, “Style is knowing who you are, what you want to say, and not giving a damn.”
What do you think of Bohemian Grunge?
